Red Bluff is the county seat of Tehama County, California. As of the 2000 census, the incorporated city had a total population of 13,147 but it is estimated (as of 2007) at 26,000 due to recent annexations. Red Bluff is about 30 miles (48 km) south of Redding, 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Chico, and 125 miles (201 km) north of Sacramento. It is the third largest city in the Shasta Cascade, an area well-known for its numerous lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, including Shasta Lake (30,000 ac surface, 370mi of shoreline), Trinity Lake, Lake Almanor, Eagle Lake, the Sacramento River (one of the largest salmon spawning rivers in the world), McCloud River, Trinity River, Mossbrae Falls, the McCloud River Falls, and Burney Falls.

The Nomlaki people originally inhabited this area along the banks of the Sacramento River. The earliest known European visitor was the Spanish explorer Luis Argello in 1821. Jedediah Smith followed in 1828, then Peter Lassen, John Burheim and John Bidwell in 1843; Lassen then applied for a Mexican land grant. The first house was an adobe put up late in 1849. Settlement began in 1850 when Sashel Woods and Charles L. Wilson began laying out a town called Leodocia (sometimes known as Covertsburg) until 1854, when maps showed the community as Red Bluffs. Being at the head of navigation, Red Bluff soon forged ahead, and during the early mining excitement was a great staging town; there was an immense amount of transhipping and teaming of goods. It languished later on with the subsidence of activity in the mines, reviving again in the early 1870s on the advent of the railroad. In 1854, Red Bluff had a population of 1,000, doubling by 1860. There was a strong attempt to locate the county seat at Tehama, but in March 1857, Red Bluff was chosen and was incorporated in 1876.

Today, Red Bluff still maintains a small town feel, with a historic downtown area and a new clock tower. Redding Municipal Airport, CSU Chico, mountain adventures, wineries and more are minutes away (SAC: 2 hours, SFO: 4 hours). Housing and land prices are still reasonable throughout the Tehama and Shasta region, making it an excellent choice for commercial, retirement and vacation property. Add warm summers, mild winters and 25 inches of annual rainfall and you have a great package... I would highly encourage you to plan a visit and experience the Red Bluff lifestyle!
